UPDATE: Police say body found by tracks a suicide

Woman found early Tuesday morning

TERRE HAUTE — Investigators believe a woman who died early Tuesday morning after being struck by a train committed suicide.

Just before 5 a.m., Vigo County sheriff’s deputies were called to railroad tracks near Springhill Drive and South 20th Street south of the Terre Haute city limits on the report of a pedestrian struck by a train.

On arrival, deputies discovered a woman lying beside the tracks. An autopsy later in the day indicated the woman died from multiple trauma, said Dr. Susan Amos, Vigo County Coroner.

Investigation revealed that the woman, 63, of Terre Haute, had attempted suicide several times in the past, according to a news release issued by the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department. A person familiar with the woman stated she had recently made the comment that pills don’t work, so she would jump in front of a train, according to the release.

“There were no signs of foul play,” said Clark Cottom, chief deputy of the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department.

A makeshift bed was discovered near the woman’s body, leading to questions as to whether she might have been homeless. However, the woman did have a residence, Cottom said.

The makeshift bed and other property indicated that the woman had spent the night near the tracks, according to the news release.

The woman was carrying identification, Cottom said. By late Tuesday, the next of kin of the woman had been notified. However, due to the nature of the death, her name was not being made available at the time of the news release.
