ARCTIC BLAST 2014: Vigo Schools to remain closed for fourth day

TERRE HAUTE — For a fourth straight day, public schools will be closed in Vigo County  today because of a winter storm that dropped 10 inches of snow Sunday, making travel dangerous and at times impossible.

Dan Tanoos, superintendent of the Vigo County School Corp., said Thursday that many school buses remain snowbound and drivers cannot reach the roads. He also said that many teachers and staff are still snowed in at their homes.

Work continued on clearing snow-filled school parking lots, he said, noting that he has been driving many of the county roads and has been in contact with county and city officials about getting roads and sidewalks cleared to make it safe to transport students.

“We’ve had conference calls three times a day with Duke Energy, the sheriff’s department, the emergency management agency, county commissioners and highway department,” Tanoos said of the discussions about safety during the recent near-blizzard.

Building issues have not been a problem, the superintendent said.

“We have had some boilers go down, but when they did, we were able to get them started with no problem,” Tanoos said. “The big issue has been buses snowed in and teachers snowed in. And the slick and snowy sidewalks are not safe for students who walk.”

The decision to cancel classes today was made at about 11 a.m.

County EMA director Dorene Hojnicki said that many problem areas still exited around the county as of Wednesday evening.

“Some roads are snow-packed, icy and a single lane,” she told the Tribune-Star, noting that conference calls continue with the sheriff’s department and commissioners. “The consensus is to remain at travel watch for Thursday. We will advise when travel status changes.”
