Hungry? Several downtown restaurants open for business

Some downtown Terre Haute restaurants re-opened for business this morning after staying closed Monday due to the severe winter weather.

Among those ready for customers were Cackleberries, Chava’s, J. Gumbo’s and Clabber Girl. Chava’s remained open Monday.

Timmy Popoff, one of the workers at Cackleberries — a family-owned business — said a nephew had to pick him up to take him to work this morning. His car wouldn’t start. “This cold weather kills batteries,” he said.

A few patrons ate there this morning, including some emergency response personnel and others who own businesses.

The ISU men’s basketball team ate a late breakfast there before catching a plane heading for Des Moines, Iowa, where they will play Drake on Wednesday.

Also working at the restaurant this morning was server Amber Dunigan, who had a friend take her to work. “I was snowed in,” she said of her snowbound vehicle.

During the bad weather, she said she tried to “stay in where it’s warm.”

The restaurant was closed Monday. The lot was covered with snow and people weren’t getting out much anyway, Popoff said. “It was 10 degrees below zero; people couldn’t get their vehicles started,” he said.

This morning, employee Jared Glass was by himself at J. Gumbos, preparing food for customers. The restaurant was not fully staffed because business was expected to be slower than normal.

“We’re trying to get back to normal as much as possible,” Glass said.
