Plans brewing for 2nd wave of snow

VCSC to issue closing notices well in advance

TERRE HAUTE — Vigo County School Corp. officials plan to give the public plenty of advance notice Sunday whether school Monday is on, delayed or canceled, Superintendent Dan Tanoos said Friday.

Students and staff are scheduled to return to school Monday after a two-week winter break.

If the subzero temperatures and snow accumulations come through as expected, “I really would expect a delay, at minimum, but more than likely a cancellation,” he said. “I’ll make a decision early enough on Sunday to give everyone advance notice.”

With subzero temperatures and even colder wind chills, he is concerned about children waiting at bus stops and walking to school. Also, staff may not be able to start cars and some school buses may not start.

“We’ll do what’s in the best interest of students and staff,” Tanoos said. Once the district makes a decision, news media will be informed and it will be posted on the VCSC website.

The district has three snow make-up days built into the school calendar on May 9, 12 and 23. But if school is out more than three days because of weather, “That causes problems,” he said.

Once snow makeup days are used, additional makeup days are typically added to the end of the scheduled school year.

At Indiana State University, classes are scheduled to resume Monday for spring semester and as of Friday, no delays or cancellations were planned.

But because of the combined bitter cold, possible heavy snow accumulation and strong winds that could cause drifting, officials will monitor the weather on Sunday, said Dave Taylor, ISU media relations director.

If delays, closings or cancellations become necessary, ISU has a variety of ways to alert the campus community. These include posts on the university homepage,; RAVE text messages; email;  MyISU, the ISU information line at 812-237-7777 and the media.

“We have found in the past that students and faculty rely most on the ISU website for information about the status of classes,” Taylor said.

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology classes also will resume Monday. Because of the winter storm, residence halls will open at 8 a.m. today instead of noon so parents can bring back students early “to beat the storm and get back home,” said Dale Long, RHIT director of media relations.
