Two hurt when truck hits café

DUGGER — A coal truck made an unexpected stop Tuesday morning at the Coal Miner Café in Sullivan County.

About 10:30 a.m. police were called to the roadside café in the town of Dugger after a semitrailer smashed into the restaurant, injuring two patrons.

Injured inside the café were Madge Booker, 81, of Sullivan and Gloria Bixler, 66, of Dugger. Both appeared to escape serious injury but were treated for complaints of pain at Sullivan County Community Hospital.

A preliminary police investigation indicated an empty coal-hauling semi-trailer driven by Gary Nash, 63, of Sullivan, was eastbound on Indiana 54 and turned south onto Indiana 159. It then suddenly veered to the right, leaving the roadway and driving into the café.

Nash was taken to Sullivan County Community Hospital for investigation into the possibility a medical condition may have contributed to the crash. There were no immediate defects found with the vehicle, and drugs and alcohol were ruled out as factors, according to a news release from the Indiana State Police.

The semitrailer was operating under the name of Ajax Trucking of Sullivan.

The crash was investigated by ISP Trooper Tyler Van Ness. Assisting were ISP Trooper Brent Robinson, Dugger Town Marshal Dave Heaton, Dugger Fire/Rescue, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office and Sullivan County EMS.
