TERRE HAUTE — United Way of the Wabash Valley is offering multiple volunteer opportunities in its eighth annual Day of Action.

The 2013 Day of Action will be from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 14.

“There are multiple ways people can go about signing up,” said Dylan Riggen, campaign associate. “Interested volunteers can call our office at 812-235-6287, email me directly at dylan.riggen

@local.unitedway.org or visit our website at uwwv.org and there is a volunteer section there.”

According to United Way’s website, the Day of Action “is the day we stand up for ourselves, our friends, our families and our community to pledge to change the course of our future.”

Day of Action aims to bring businesses in need of service and volunteers willing to help together for a few hours to help out the local community, he said.

“I see it as my most important event of the year,” Riggen said. “We set up a committee two months in advance to begin reaching out to potential volunteers and businesses.”

He added that last year had about 350 volunteers participate in 26 projects. This year’s goal is to have about 400 volunteers working on 30 projects. As of now there are approximately 20 projects listed, but more will be added as the amount of volunteers increase.

There will also be a breakfast for the volunteers at Zorah’s Shrine on the Indiana State University campus at 7:30 a.m.

“For the volunteers, I hope it brings a better sense of community, and for the agencies, I hope they can get projects completed that they may not have had the staff or time to get done,” Riggen said.
