Fatal car-train accident in Sullivan County

SULLIVAN COUNTY — The fatal collision between a train and a car Wednesday morning in Sullivan County occurred on a private drive.

Julie A. Racey, 29, of Oaktown was driving a 1997 Lincoln Continental eastbound on a private drive near 5781 S. Old U.S. 41 in Carlisle when a CSX freight train with two engines and 33 cars, loaded with freight, approached the unmarked crossing.

The accident happened around 9:15 a.m.

Preliminary investigation by Indiana State Police revealed that the train slammed into the driver’s side of the vehicle, forcing it off the tracks. Racey was pronounced dead at the scene by the Sullivan County Coroner’s Office.

Racey had been a home health-care worker en route to a nearby residence for an appointment.

According to a news release from State Police, witnesses at the scene reported hearing the train horn at the time of the crash.

The train engineer was Christopher Flagg, 37, of Newburgh.

Trooper Mike Taylor was assisted at the scene by Trooper Polly Blackburn, crash reconstructionist Trooper Chris Carter, Sullivan County Sheriff Brian Kinnett and deputies Dave Haddix and Jason Bobbitt, Sullivan County Coroner’s Office, Sullivan County EMS, Carlisle Town Marshal’s Office and the Carlisle Fire Department.

Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash. Racey had been wearing her seat belt and was not ejected.
