State troopers save woman trapped under wrecked van

SEYMOUR, Ind. — State Police say three troopers helped save the life of a southern Indiana woman who became pinned beneath her van following a highway crash.

Sgt. Noel Houze says 51-year-old Malinda Miller-Bell of Charlestown was airlifted to University Hospital in Louisville, Ky., following Sunday’s crash along Interstate 65. She was listed in stable condition today and Houze tells The Republic of Columbus that Miller-Bell is expected to survive her injuries.

Her van overturned in the southbound lanes of the highway just north of Seymour, ejecting Miller-Bell’s 15-year-old son from the vehicle, but her head became pinned beneath the van.

Houze says three troopers used car jacks to stabilize the van until medics were able to use airbags to lift it and free her.
