Arrest made after man dies in New Year's Eve stabbing

Police say other arrests possible as investigation continues

TERRE HAUTE — With the new year only hours away, the year 2013 ended with a homicide in Terre Haute and the arrest of a suspect.

Phillip A. Evans, 35, was booked into the Vigo County Jail on a preliminary charge of murder and aggravated battery related to the stabbing death of a 27-year-old man, whose name was not released by police pending notification of relatives.

Assistant Chief Shawn Keen of the Terre Haute Police Department reported that at 7:26 p.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a report of a fight in process in the 2600 block of Dillman Street on the city’s southwest side.

One of the responding officers found an unresponsive man on the ground in front of the residence. While performing CPR, officers noticed stab wounds and trauma on the man’s body.

He was transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives at the homicide scene began processing the location for evidence and spoke to witnesses. Evans was detained soon thereafter. According to court records, Evans has a criminal history.

Keen said the investigation is ongoing and other arrests are possible.
