ISP warning of rural residential thefts

The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE Residential thefts are leading Indiana State Police to offer tips on homeowner safety.

According to a media released issued by the ISP, the Terre Haute Post was investigating residential thefts resulting in about $25,000 in loss to southern Vigo County homeowners.

In one instance, thieves made off with the victim’s pickup and numerous tools.

In another, thieves stole numerous tools and a go-cart.

Both instances occurred in rural areas between 2 and 6 a.m., all items taken were from unlocked and poorly lit outbuildings and the keys were left in the pickup truck, according to the release.

One resident of the same area reportedly lost a 2000 Caterpillar backhoe estimated at $40,000 in value.

A spike in property crimes occasionally occurs during the Christmas season, and with the strains on the national economy, the chances of being the victim of theft are even greater.

State Police advise residents to consider the following steps in protecting their belongings:

n Lock all doors to your house and outbuildings using deadbolts

n Secure all windows

n Do not leave garage or barn doors open that actively display your goods to would be thieves

n Install or maintain security lighting

n Install security systems if your budget allows

n Put identification markings on tools and other items of value

n Do not leave keys in vehicles and lock all vehicles (garage door openers are commonly left inside and can make easy access to your home or garage).

n Inform trusted neighbors of your extended absence

n Immediately report suspicious activity or vehicles to police
