Voters opt to eliminate assessors in 31 townships

Voters in 31 of the 43 townships where township assessors still exist voted Tuesday to eliminate them, according to information from MySmartgov.org, an organization formed to advocate for streamlined local government.

The question “Should the assessing duties of the elected township assessor in the township be transferred to the county assessor?” appeared on election ballots.

In Vigo County, voters voted “no,” desiring to keep its Harrison Township assessor.

The 2008 General Assembly abolished township assessors in 965 townships, but left it to voters in the 43 most populous townships to decide if they want to do the same.
