Rural Recreation Development Training session set for Oct. 23

Special to the Tribune-Star

The second Indiana Rural Recreation Development Training will take place Oct. 23 at Indiana State University and communities from around the state are invited to participate for free.

Hosted by the Indiana Rural Recreation Development Project at ISU, the training will focus on establishing not-for-profit fundraising organizations and accounts with local community foundations for rural public recreation departments and parks boards.

“The goal of this year’s training is to assist 10 to 12 communities in actually writing their governing documents and completing their incorporation paperwork to establish nonprofit park and recreation fundraising organizations,” said Nathan A. Schaumleffel, director of the Recreation Development Project and assistant professor of recreation and sport management at ISU.

To achieve that goal, the Recreation Development Project has joined with the Indiana University School of Law’s Nonprofit Law Clinic. Schaumleffel and Cindy Lott, director of the IU Nonprofit Law Clinic, are collaborating to provide this important capacity building service for rural Indiana communities.

Participating communities will be joined with an IU law student and will be required to send at least two community leaders to the training.

Participants will have some “homework” before the training to take full advantage of available resources. The training will begin with an informational session, followed by a hands-on small group workshop with law students designed to help communities set up their organizations.

For more information about the training opportunity, visit www1.indstate.edu/inrrdp/ruralrecreationtraining.htm. Learn more about the Indiana University School of Law’s Nonprofit Law Clinic at nplc.law.indiana.edu.

To register for the training or for more information, contact Schaumleffel at (812) 237-2189 or nschaumleff@indstate.edu.

The deadline to register for the training is Oct. 10.
