A 9-year-old boy injured after being thrown from an all-terrain vehicle Sunday evening suffered extensive head injuries, according to the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department.
No information on the boy’s condition was available Monday.
The child, whose name has not been released, was racing his ATV with another boy in the river bottoms in West Terre Haute, according to Chief Deputy Jake Compton.
He was thrown from the vehicle when his ATV struck a solid steel gate. He was wearing a helmet.
The other boy who was riding a different ATV alongside the victim ran to get his father, who also was on an ATV, according to Compton. The adult moved the injured boy up to Interstate 70, where he could summon help.
The child was taken to Terre Haute Regional Hospital and later taken by Lifeline helicopter to Indianapolis.
