Caucus set for Aug. 2 in Clinton to replace former mayor

Tribune-Star staff report

A Democrat Party caucus will be conducted at 10 a.m. Aug. 2 to replace former Clinton Mayor Jerry Hawkins, who submitted a letter of resignation Tuesday to the Clinton City Council.

Democrat Party Chairman Henry J. Antonini said the closed caucus will take place in his office at 224 S. Main St. in Clinton. Four precinct committee members will select a new mayor.

Antonini said state law requires a majority vote of those present to elect a candidate, and Antonini said he is checking with the Indiana Elections Division to determine if he would cast a vote should the caucus be divided in a 2-2 tie.

Antonini said he will certify the caucus results to the Vermillion County Clerk on Aug. 4, saying he wants to have a mayor in place before the City Council meets on Aug. 12.

Hawkins, through his wife, declined comment Wednesday.

In his letter of resignation, Hawkins said, “over the past month or two my wife and I have encountered some health concerns that have caused me to rethink my personal priorities. It is with those thoughts in mind, and at the request of my family, that I have decided to leave the public office at this time.

“Although I regret not being able to accomplish the goals I had for the city, the health and well-being of my family is the most important thing in my life. At age 68, spending time with those who mean the most to me is my primary obligation.”

Antonini said he “was stunned” by Hawkins’ resignation. “I didn’t know about any health problems. I felt with the difficulties that we have, [Hawkins] was the most likable person to get things straightened out.”

Roy Strayer, president of the City Council, will assume the duties of mayor until the caucus, Antonini said.

No candidates had filed as of Wednesday, the party chairman said, but have until 72 hours before the caucus. Hawkins won election as mayor last November and was sworn into office in January.
