Wabash Valley fires up Fourth festivities

TERRE HAUTE Concerns brewing during Thursday’s cloudy, humid morning were laid to rest by late afternoon, and the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation department scored a great evening for its annual holiday celebration.

“Everything’s going pretty good,” remarked parks department superintendent Eddie Bird just before 9 p.m, with no rain in sight. “We have a good crowd.”

Fireworks began at dark, about 9:30, and a pavilion full of listeners were ready to celebrate Independence Day after live music from the Terre Haute Community Band, which also featured an American flag ceremony.

Bob Parr, owner of Parr Concessions, said things were “going great” as he served Italian subs and other fair food from his booth.

Food at the festivities ranged from $1 hot dogs to $5 Philly steak and cheese sandwiches and $5 shish-ka-bobs at about half a dozen different vendors.

Sue Thomas of The Fundazzlers said her group was busy with its offering of face-painting, hair wraps and hair jewelry to young and old alike throughout the park.

More festivities are scheduled throughout the weekend at Fairbanks Park, including Saturday night’s repeat performance by the Terre Haute Community Band. Selections are being made from a collection of patriotic works including “America the Beautiful,” “American Patrol,” “Band of Brothers,” “General Douglas MacArthur,” “March from 1941,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” and others.
