Cystic Firbrosis walk set Sunday

Staff report
The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE About 200 people are expected to take great strides Sunday in Deming Park for Cystic Fibrosis.

Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States. There is no cure, and people with the disease live to be about 37 years old on average, according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Web site.

Money raised from Sunday’s Great Strides walk will go toward research to find a cure for the disease, said local race chairwoman Jamie Bozarth.

Bozarth said the expected turnout this year is significantly larger than years past.

“We have lots and lots of teams that registered online,” she said.

Starbucks’ help, which is new this year, has contributed to the turnout with the incentives it’s providing for walkers. It is also expected to give away prizes, Bozarth said.

Walking in the event is free, but contributing $100 in donations will earn people T-shirts. A spaghetti and breadstick lunch will be provided after the walk from Fazolli’s.

Registration starts at 12:30 p.m. and the walk begins at 1. The walk, which will be two laps around Deming Park, will start at the Big Lion Shelter.

Terre Haute walkers won’t be alone as Great Stride events are slated to take place in 47 states this weekend. The foundation’s goal is to raise $38 million this year.

“Come and help us raise money, raise awareness,” Bozarth said. “We’re trying to add more tomorrows for our children.”
