Terre Haute Police were investigating a shooting late Wednesday inside a house at Ninth Street and Third Avenue.
A 19-year-old male was shot about 10:30 p.m. in what initially appeared to be a self-inflicted wound, officers at the scene said.
Police could not say, however, if the man had been shot intentionally or accidentally, said officer Mike Ellerman.
The victim was rushed to a hospital. Police did not release his name and his condition could not be determined. Police scanner traffic earlier had indicated a report of a man who had been shot in the head.
Investigators, trying to determine if anyone witnessed the shooting, were talking to people who were at the house when police arrived.
Crime-scene technicians were looking for evidence.
