Clay Community Schools classes stand canceled today because of an electrical problem in Clay City, school officials report.
But power at Clay City Jr./Sr. High School as well as the elementary should be back on today as Duke Energy replaces a transformer that failed Wednesday afternoon.
“It’s just one of those things, equipment just failed and it was a large transformer,” said Rick Burger, spokesman for Duke Energy.
On Wednesday afternoon, the schools experienced a power outage when the electrical transformer and related wiring caught fire, according to a media release from the school corporation.
No significant damage or injuries were reported and students were moved to the gymnasium when the loss of power occurred.
It will not be possible to conduct classes at the Clay City campus today, therefore, all schools within Clay Community Schools will be closed, and all extracurricular activities scheduled at Clay City High School and North Clay Middle School canceled, the release said.
The girls softball team should report to Clay City High School for departure at 3:20 p.m. for the scheduled game at Eminence. Extracurricular activities at Northview High School in Brazil will be staged as scheduled.
Burger said the transformer had to be brought in from Plainfield.
