Valley honors victims’ rights

13th annual event helps bring about community’s attention

By Deb Kelly
The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE Victims of crime and their loved ones will have an opportunity this week to share their stories and meet others whose lives have been torn apart after being victimized.

During National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, through Saturday, the Wabash Valley is participating in a Ceremony of Remembrance at 7 p.m. Wednesday on the south side of City Hall.

The event will feature musical selections, guest speakers, refreshments and a survivor speak-out at the Ribbon of Hope sculpture.

Those who have been victims of a crime or family members of those who have been victims of a crime are invited to share anything they would like during the survivor speak-out.

Victims from throughout the Wabash Valley and surrounding communities are welcome, according to Kathy Minger, who serves as victims’ advocate in the office of Crime Victim Assistance in Vigo County.

Minger has helped organize the event.

Guest speakers include Liz O’Laughlin from the CARE Council, who is helping coordinate Prevent Child Abuse Month; Charles Fuhrer, who is with Court Appointed Special Advocates; and Prosecutor Terry Modesitt.

Minger said the event, in its 13th year in Vigo County, is “just a way to bring about attention from the community for victims and their families. It is also a way to honor and remember people who have lost their lives to crime.”

For more information, call Minger or Jessica Woodruff at Crime Victim Assistance Program at (812) 462-3319.
