County pool plan seems to be best

I have been following the debate on the swimming pools in Terre Haute. I understand that the pools at the schools will need to be closed because it’s too costly to fix the pools. The school corporation wants to build a new swimming facility centrally located in the county to meet the need of the high school students.

The pool will also be used by the Terre Haute Torpedoes for their events and to teach young children how to swim. The corporation also said that the pool will be available at certain times for the public to use.

I believe that the concept is good, but I offer some thoughts.

The school corporation intends to pay for the pool by the use of bonds. They say that there is a bond that will be maturing soon, so there will be no increase in taxes. I say this because we have several schools that are over 40 years old and will need to be upgraded or new schools built sometime in the next 10 to 15 years. All three high schools will need to be updated soon to keep up with changing technology. This will need to be paid for by another bond, which means an increase in property taxes.

Vigo County officials have offered their concept of a public water park that would be open to all the taxpayers of the county and neighboring counties. It would be large enough to host national events that benefit the entire community. The county’s plan would be paid for with EDIT taxes and revenue generated from the pool. Given a choice between the school idea that will benefit fewer than 2,000 students a year and the county idea that will benefit tens of thousands of taxpayers in the county, the choice is clear. The county pools will benefit the community far more than what the schools plan does.

Now my idea would be to build the aquatic facility along the Wabash River to form an anchor for new development with the riverscape concept. Just think, we have a pool available as a draw to the community, and then maybe a convention center and hotel next to the aquatics center. Then how about a combination retail and apartments next to the hotel?

With a river walk between the river and the developments connecting to the trails in the city, and to the sports facilities that ISU will build west of Third Street, we have the start of a great new tourist attraction that will benefit all of the community.

Many reasons for Islamic reforms

In his Aug. 23 letter, Edward Kesler  describes several hateful teachings of the Koran. Mr. Kesler did not mention that the Koran also authorizes Jihadists, the warriors of Islam, to rape non-Muslim women captured during war, and also authorizes Muslim men to beat their disobedient wives.

Enlightened Muslims can no longer remain silent; they need to bring about change in Islamic teachings.
