Community efforts produced success at state XC meet

Recently, the Vigo County School Corp. and Terre Haute North High School had the opportunity to host the 2013 IHSAA State Cross Country Championships at the Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course. This event brought thousands of visitors to Terre Haute, giving this city, school corporation and sports center a chance to show off our community.

This year’s event was a huge success and would not have been possible without the support of volunteers who contribute countless hours in preparation for the race. Beginning with the support and leadership of VCSC Superintendent Danny Tanoos, the support of the administrative staff of Terre Haute North High School including Principal Robin Smith, Athletic Director Shane Abrell, Assistant Athletic Director Kris Painter and the effort of countless volunteers from each of the VCSC high schools, the event was unparalleled in its success. Many others deserve a word of thanks for their efforts.

Our community is very fortunate to have the leadership and energy of Dave Patterson, director of the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau. He is tireless in his efforts to support such events and to make certain that, not only does the community benefit, but that participants and visitors have a first-class experience in Terre Haute. This fact was not lost with the IHSAA as well, as Mr. Phil Gardner, assistant commissioner with the IHSAA, publicly recognized the contributions of Mr. Patterson.

Indiana State University’s coaching staff, including Jeff and Angie Martin, have also been a large part of this event Their support of high school athletics and the LaVern Gibson course ia truly a community asset.

It is reassuring to see the outpouring of support from the community in making such an event a success. From the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, the Terre Haute City Police Department to the Vigo County EMTs, all of the public agencies carried their duties out in a responsible and professional manner.

Terre Haute should also be quite proud of its youths. The 2013 state champion, Jackson Bertoli, hailed from Terre Haute South, and the THS boys team earned a podium finish. In addition, the Terre Haute North girls team qualified for its 10th straight state meet appearance. Just as importantly, students from Terre Haute North took the lead in developing a webcast/simulcast of the 2013 state meet.  The web event was viewed by over 5,000 people in five different countries. THN students also were responsible for the camera work, sound and course management during the race. Our community should rest assured that we have some of the finest youths in the state, young people who are certain to go on to bigger and better things.

The parents of the Terre Haute North cross country teams deserve special recognition for their ongoing support of their children and school. They have ably assisted in all aspects of the meet and have always been willing to do whatever is needed in support of the team and community. Our corporation is truly fortunate for such support, and I am certain that all of the other VCSC schools are equally proud of their parental involvement.

On a personal note, I would like to thank Dr. Mike Urban, Sam Bunch and Ryan Johnson for their efforts and support in making this meet what it is today. Their energy and effort do not go unnoticed and for them, I am grateful.
