Standing against horse slaughters

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s approval of a horse-slaughtering operation the same month Americans celebrate our freedom is a cruel juxtaposition indeed.

The quintessential symbols of our American West may soon be on the receiving end of a captive-bolt gun so that their flesh can be sold to other countries for human consumption.

Killing horses anywhere is a bloody, violent business. Horses are jammed into tractor trailers and are given no food or water, and they are never taken out to stretch or breathe fresh air. Those who don’t perish during transport often suffer serious injuries, including broken bones and compound fractures, open wounds from being kicked or bitten, and massive bruising.

The killing of horses in the United States, as well as shipping them to Mexico or Canada to do the dirty work, must both be banned.

People who don’t want to see horses strung up, bled out, and cut into pieces should ask their representatives to support an appropriations bill that would block spending for inspections at horse-slaughter facilities, effectively banning the operations until at least next year.

Ask your representative to support the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act (S. 541/H.R. 1094) which would ban the slaughter of horses in the U.S. as well as the export of American horses for slaughter.

If passed, these bills would effectively end the slaughter of American horses for human consumption.
