TERRE HAUTE —

Great parade, but some were AWOL

I first would like to say it was a wonderful Veterans Day parade and ceremony following at the VFW, and thank you to all of our veterans and those presently serving.

I am so proud to be an American and so thankful to have the many freedoms we enjoy daily.

While American is not perfect, it is the best country. This is why I feel compelled to write this letter. While attending the ceremony the organizer, Mr. Clifford Stephens, asked that the county commissioners come to the stage. At this point not one was present, so later he asked again and still the same outcome.

At this point I became appalled, embarrassed and ashamed by this. After all, it was just last Tuesday these commissioners were the same people begging the citizens of Vigo County to vote for them. I as a faithful voter will not forget their absenteeism to honor our veterans when and if their name appears on the ballot in the future. If they can’t respect our veterans, can we really expect them to respect the citizens of Vigo County?

I would like to thank the mayor of Terre Haute and chief of police, who spoke a beautiful tribute, for joining us in honoring the veterans.

Thank you again to all veterans and actively serving men and women. May god bless and be with you.

Fine line from Mitt Romney

President Obama won a second term. Before the speeches and short narratives of the campaign disappear in the twilight zone of history, I would like to record one phrase spoken by Gov. Mitt Romney.

On the last weekend of the “battle,” Obama urged his supporters to vote for revenge. Mr. Romney, in very short order, told a crowd at a rally to disregard the term “revenge” and “Vote for love of country.”

In my view, these few words constitute the finest phrase in the campaign of the year 2012.

If I had the opportunity to meet Gov. Romney, I would invite him to my favorite fast-food restaurant (here in Terre Haute) for a cup of coffee for me and a glass of orange juice for Mr. Romney.

I would say to him: “Sir, that phrase (”Vote for love of country”) was a great line.

I wish you and your family the very best.

A connection?

Why have so many companies announced layoffs, plant closings and reductions in hours worked in the few short days since Obama won re-election?
