Join the fight to end hunger

Food is fuel. Without it, a child misses the opportunity to live up to his or her potential.

Conversely, well-fed kids tend to be healthier and perform better in school. Food insecurity has been linked to increased hospitalizations, academic problems, developmental delays, headaches, stomach aches and even colds. Not surprisingly, hunger during childhood has been linked to significant health problems in adulthood.

You may also be interested to know that there is overwhelming evidence that children who eat breakfast tend to consume more nutrients and experience lower obesity rates.

As we embark on the fifth decade of providing basic needs services to west-central Indiana, we find no pleasure in reporting 24 percent of our children experience limited access to food. For so many years we’ve been engaged in the battle to reduce hunger, but it is still a serious issue today for more than 13,500 children in just our part of the state.

A little more than six months ago, we publicly launched our campaign to create a new foodbank that would serve as a distribution facility to more than 94 member agencies throughout Clay, Greene, Knox, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo counties. This new facility will allow us to feed more people, and provide more fresh produce in the process.

However, we need your help. Just as we’ve been able to feed people by partnering with the residents of west-central Indiana, we again invite you to be part of our growing efforts. We still need to raise about 30 percent of our goal, the equivalent of $750,000, in order to finish renovations of an existing building.

If you too believe reducing hunger is a moral issue and are willing to help us make a difference in our community, I invite you to join us by visiting our website at archindy.org/cc/terrehaute/
