Like it or not, change coming

Columnist Andrea Neal in her June 6 discussion against decriminalizing marijuana directs our attention to the great success of educating ourselves on the health risks of tobacco and the restrictions enacted to discourage its use. However, we don’t criminalize tobacco.

She lists many health hazards attributed to marijuana, all of which also describe alcohol use. However, we don’t criminalize alcohol.

Yes, tobacco, alcohol and marijuana have health risks, but we’ve learned that marijuana has some health benefits, too. These are not addressed by Ms. Neal. She asserts the laughable untruth that marijuana promotes violence, demonstrating her lack of personal experience with her subject and thus undermining her credibility.

National legalization is coming, not because of propaganda but our growing awareness that it’s less destructive than tobacco and alcohol which we accept, and being branded a felon for life is an expensive and cruelly harsh punishment.

To quote the prestigious Bob Zimmerman Research Council, “Get out of the way if you can’t lend a hand, for the times they are a changin’.”
