What is the cost of our austerity?
The current issue of Fortune magazine (June 10, 2013) features a review of Meredith Whitney’s new book, “Fate of the States: The New Geography of American Prosperity.” She shows the state of Indiana as having “the third-lowest debt per capita in the nation and a higher credit rating than the United States.”
Wow! This is an accomplishment, but at what cost? We had to close our library branches and cut our public school budgets. Local governments, big and small, are struggling to fix streets and roads, maintain parks and keep up police and fire protection.
Do I want our state to follow in the footsteps of California and Illinois who owe billions in obligations?
Of course not, but can’t we reach some kind of a happy medium keeping our state finances in order, and still provide our residents with necessary services?
Surely our elected state officials of both parties can compromise and come up with a solution. At least, let us hope so.

Vintage campers to gather at rally
The Southern Indiana Vintage Camper Rally will once again be coming to Terre Haute. This fifth season event will be held on Thursday through Sunday. Once again, the rally will be held at Fowler Park and Pioneer Village, located just south of Terre Haute, on East Oregon Church Road.
This year’s rally will feature camping trailers from the 1950s, ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. There will be a good mixture of canned hams, toaster-style campers, pull trailers, motor homes and vintage pop-up campers. Each one is unique and many have themes.
Although a scheduled open house is not being offered this year, the public is welcome to walk through the park, chat with the owners, and inspect the trailers — just look for the color “Please feel free to tour our camper at this time” signs on the campers.
This year’s rally will coincide with the Fowler Park’s Pioneer Weekend at the park’s Pioneer Village. It’s great fun for the whole family, and free to the public.
Wear your walking shoes. We hope to see you there.
