Steamed by rise in gasoline prices

We the people in and around the Terre Haute area who buy here are getting a total rip-off at the gas pumps.

I just got back in town from a trip to St. Louis, Mo., which I do frequently. I left on Saturday, June 1, and gas was $3.69 a gallon. In Illinois it was $3.59 at most stations. Illinois people used to come to Terre Haute to purchase their gas and now they don’t and haven’t for some time. We passed them up on high prices on the fuel.

In St. Louis and all around the area, gas was $3.36 a gallon both Saturday and Sunday, 31⁄2 hours away. We are talking about 63 cents per gallon less. What a rip-off we are getting.

It used to be that some station owners and oil companies had the excuse when people complained it was because of the price of crude went up, or any lame excuse they could think of to temporarily satisfy the public. These were excuses, not reasons.

Now they don’t even try to make one up, they just raised it from $3.69 to $3.99 in one or two days.

I wonder what they will use now. What a rip-off. If we only had some way to force them to justify their cost and lower their prices.

They are laughing all the way to the bank.

There are no correlations between the actual crude prices per barrel and at the pump, only when they want to raise them.

My bet is to get the speculators out of the oil business and it would bring the pump prices down, some anyway.

Time to look into voucher results

On Friday, May 31, this paper ran an article from the Associated Press as follows:

“Indiana’s growing school voucher program is resulting in a modest gain for public schools.

“The Indiana Department of Education announced Wednesday that $5 million is owed the state schools because of savings achieved through school vouchers.

“The state spends less money on students receiving vouchers than for public school students, and the difference is returned to public schools.”

Now $5 million will not fill the public school coffers to the desired level, but a trend has been set and more savings can be expected. However, it would seem the good news of this savings, that is desired by all taxpayers that I know of, would warrant an in-depth report by Maureen Hayden or another of your staff writers.

Troubling precedent

The jails are soon to be empty. Due to a precedent set by Obama, Eric Holder, the U.S. attorney general, gets to investigate himself to see if he has committed any crimes.

When anyone comes before a judge, just say I have investigated myself and I have done no wrong. Quote Holder and wave goodbye to the judge. Wow, what a precedent.
