Lame excuses from Time Warner cable
This is an open letter to Time Warner cable of Terre Haute.
Your statement on TV saying, “We don’t believe that you should be forced to pay for programming that you can get for free with an antenna or online” is absolutely absurd. By having your basic service, we are paying for it.
If you are charging the public for viewing WTHI, WTWO, etc. (that very programming that you say is free), why are you charging us for it and/or not giving some of that money back to those stations that even you say is “free”? Time Warner cable is making a profit from charging for those “free” stations. If WTHI is asking for one penny per month per customer, that is only approximately 30 cents per month of my over $90 per month Time Warner cable bill.
Your company is a very greedy company, the same type that I consider to be at the cause of our country’s financial problems. I wish there was another cable company here in Terre Haute to give you some competition. Your statement on your comment form, “Customers are our number one priority” is not even true. Any time my cable has been out, you never give any rebate or reduction in my monthly cable bill.
There is no need to waste your time or mine in replying to my comments, as I don’t want to hear any more lame excuses as to why you do what you do. I am simply stating some comments that I and a lot of other Time Warner cable customers feel is true.

McCain right to rein in haters
I am not a John McCain fan but I have to give him credit for his recent stand in this presidential campaign.
After weeks of personal attacks on Barack Obama by Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin stirred up the haters in this country, Sen. McCain understands where this is headed. And he has taken steps to correct it — and that took great political courage.
At a recent rally where one of his supporters said that she could not trust Sen. Obama because he was an Arab (which is totally untrue), Sen. McCain stood up to defend Sen. Obama. He told the lady that Sen. Obama was an American and a good husband and father. At a later rally Sen. McCain again defended Sen. Obama telling people not to be afraid of Sen. Obama as president. Some of his own Republican supporters booed him for this.
I think Sen. McCain recently realized all of these attempts to paint Sen. Obama as a radical, a terrorist supporter, and a Muslim was stirring up the right-wing nut cases and creating a potentially dangerous situation. I believe he saw this could lead to someone trying assassinate Sen. Obama because of all the fear-mongering and hate. I even got an e-mail from a friend in Texas saying that the fact that two of Sen. Obama’s friends in college were Pakistani that Obama was a foreigner. I went to college with students from China. Does that make me Chinese?
There is no place in America for the culture of hate — the kind of hate that led people to assassinate John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I wanted to believe America was beyond that. I can only hope that cooler heads will prevail and keep this hate from controlling our country — again. We are better than that.
Thanks to Sen. McCain for standing up. We need more leaders to do the same before another good American is assassinated by the culture of hate.
Why do so many Americans think it is OK to spread messages of hate about a presidential candidate that millions of Americans believe is a good man who can lead this country back to the right track again? Why do politicians and their supporters think it is OK to use the kind of language that fosters hate for their opponent instead of focusing on the issues.

Privatization is creating jobs
In response to Edward Burt’s letter about privatization, I think we should balance the viewpoint by telling the real truth rather the leftist skew of reality.
Privatization is creating jobs for Hoosiers, and not only that, it’s creating higher-paying jobs in the same positions in many cases.
Tell me this: if a company is based in Philadelphia and operating a business in Indiana, then how does that hurt our state’s economy? The answer is, it doesn’t. The guys in Philadelphia aren’t delivering the food, or serving the food. A Hoosier is delivering and serving the food.
The bottom line is that privatization reduces spending, increases revenue, and creates jobs.

ISU women golfers classy volunteers
I want to recognize and thank ISU girls’ golf team for their recent youth golf program at Fore Seasons Golf Complex. They selflessly volunteered their time for a series of hour-long sessions designed to introduce kids to golf.
These classy young ladies were professional, engaging and motivating for all children, regardless of age or ability. They always had an agenda for each lesson and were constructive and positive in their coaching. I don’t recall seeing any single child bored or distant.
The children all seemed to have a great time whether they were driving, chipping, putting, or learning golf etiquette. They also rewarded children at the end of each practice through golf trivia and incentives achieved during practice.
The community, and coach Mike Whitson, should be extremely proud to have such an exceptional group of young ladies in the area. They displayed a positive influence in the community as ambassadors of golf and ISU. Keep up the great work.

WV practice field a positive move
I would like to take the time to thank Mr. Tanoos and the entire School Board for approving the new facilities for West Vigo High/Middle schools. I would like those in the corporation to know that there has been much positive talk going on over here.
I have been an active member of the Vigo County Youth Football for a few years now and I know that they are excited at the prospect of having an actual field to practice on. Many of the other teams in youth football have an actual field and we are excited that we will now have that same opportunity.
From a safety standpoint it will be nice to keep our kids off of the injury list with twisted ankles and knees from practicing in the “sandlots”. As a parent and proud member of this community, I know I speak for many when I say thank you.
