Unwise use of public highway

My sympathies to the folks who live in and around West Terre Haute.

On Saturday evening, Oct. 4, we were headed toward I-70 on U.S. 40 when we came upon what appeared to be a major catastrophe in the town. As we attempted to get around the problem area we determined it fortunately was not a disaster of the proportions it appeared. No, it was, I believe, a parade … a parade that shut down a major U.S. highway with little or no way to avoid the mess.

In case the local officials haven’t noticed, West Terre Haute is pretty much a one street town with railroads and a river forcing all east-west traffic through the area to use U.S. 40. You’d think the emergency response folks — from who knows how many towns — who were at the center of the shutdown of U.S. 40 would have known this might be a less-than-wise use of both the public highway and their expensive equipment.

Ain’t government great?

Palin shows courage on global warming

One of the national candidates has had the courage to challenge the politically correct myth of global warming.

In the vice presidential debate on Oct. 2, Sarah Palin stated her doubts that human activity is the principle cause. Sen. Biden chided her that if she doesn’t know the cause, she can’t solve the problem. Biden asserted with the same absolute certainty as the hysterical Al Gore that the cause is human activity. Well, contrary to what you read in the liberal media, Al Gore’s claim that the science is settled, and we know with certainty the cause, is not true. Not only are humans probably not the primary cause, the earth may in fact be entering a cooling period under a weakening sun.

Investor’s Business Daily noted recently that the four major agencies tracking the Earth’s temperature, including NASA’s Goddard Institute, have reported that the Earth cooled 0.7 degree Celsius in 2007, the fastest decline in the age of instrumentation, putting us back where the Earth was in 1930. Bet you didn’t read that anywhere in the Tribune-Star. Can you imagine the headline if it had warmed that much?

At the same time scientists involved in NASA’s Ulysses project have reported that the intensity of the sun’s solar wind was at its lowest point since the beginning of the space age. Further, this August, for the first time since June 1913, the sun created no visible sunspots. These are direct indications that the sun is getting less active. Although the consequences for the Earth are enormous, the global warming alarmists are not interested. Any phenomenon that is not man made and certainly not one that says we may be in for an extended cooling period has to be buried. Their agenda is to gain control and any science that doesn’t support their position is to be buried.

More importantly, they are trying at this time to impose the economy-killing cap-and-trade rationing system to limit emissions of CO2. Before we kill our economy this way, hopefully Gov. Palin can force the environmental extremists and their pandering politicians to openly debate whether there even is a problem. Wouldn’t it be something if Al Gore was forced to actually debate the subject with an adversary. Once an open debate is started it will also be seen that many of their alarmist claims are also bogus and all should be subject to scientific scrutiny.

That’s why you have never seen an open debate of this subject.

Housing developers share crisis blame

Yes, Wall Street bears blame for this financial mess, but why hasn’t an equal culprit been mentioned to any extent?

I’m referring to the developers who have overbuilt almost everywhere, creating a terrible housing glut (certainly this is true in Vigo County with its declining population).

Much of this I don’t understand, but I think it’s common sense that you don’t keep building housing units like mad in a place with declining population.
