More thanks for great support

I am Cecil Tilford’s son, Tim, and would like to add my thanks and appreciation to the outpouring on recognition Dad has recently received. I’ve been here in Terre Haute since my parents moved back from Louisville. I started working with them in late July of 1968, and have continued on a part time and whenever I’m needed basis.

A fire in 2003 forced us to move into the hotel building. My physical health problems (spinal injury) have limited the amount of time I’ve been able to put in the new, cramped quarters. There’s not much room for anyone besides Dad there. Even so, me and my son Conor are always available to Dad whenever we are needed, which is frequently.

Dad has been wonderful to work for, I can’t imagine another employer who would have given me the flexibility to coach youth sports (baseball and basketball) in Vigo County for the last 20 years. My stepson Brian and my son Conor are tremendous athletes. Brian has moved on to astrophysics, first at Rose-Hulman and now at Notre Dame. Conor, 15, has the athletic talent to play professional baseball. Both are great kids and worked many hours in their grandpa’s store.

We’ve gotten to know all the regular 12 Points customers over the years. Dad’s place is much more than a store and a post office. It’s kind of a throwback to the old country store, a social meeting place where no one is in too big a hurry (until time for the mail to go out, then it can become hectic). I’m sure anyone can realize that running this store and post office could never be done alone and there are many helpers and contributors enabling it to still survive.

Mom was a full-working partner to Dad until her untimely passing in 1999, me for 40 years, my stepson Brian until life took him on another course, and my son Conor has a few years left working there. The list of people who’ve helped is numerous.

Regardless, some must be recognized. I will try to keep the list short at risk of overlooking many. Myself, my sons, their “adopted” daughter Anita Anderson, Uncle Morris Harkes and his wife Aunt Ada (Mom’s sister), Aunt Betty Harbrueger, Dad’s brothers, Uncle Wayne and Uncle Ken Tilford, Ken’s wife Aunt Ramona, and Dad’s sister Aunt Dot. Special thanks to Brian and Michael Sweeny for the tremendous help they gave us after Mom passed away. They certainly helped keep Dad’s spirits up. And also Amanda Kesner, who still helps out occasionally.

Last, but certainly not least, Jay Jones and Rich Curtis and family, Lisa and Mary Catherine, who’ve been recognized in recent articles. And I’m sure my brother and his family would help us more if they lived closer, but unfortunately we only see them a few weekends a year.

My apologies to all those I didn’t have room to mention, but you are all in our hearts and minds. Behind every great man is always a small army of contributors, family and friends and the many wonderful people that make 12 Points such a special place and much deserving of the public’s support.

Hopefully, with this great cast of characters, we can bring 12 Points back to its former “small town of its own” status. 12 Points puts the “U” in unique.

Thank you all for all you’ve done and continue to do for this unique community.

— Tim Tilford
