The Vigo County School Corp. is fortunate to have the leadership of Superintendent Danny Tanoos, former director of career and technical education Ken Pierce, and current director of career and technical education Doug Dillion, and the Blue Ribbon Committee and many of the board members to oversee career and technical education in the Vigo County School Corp.
The Blue Ribbon Committee has worked diligently to provide a blueprint for vocational/technology advancement in all of our high schools. This committee has dedicated many hours making sure that every school can offer advance vocational/technical classes in their school.
This spring a new committee called the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Advisory Board met three times to guide the future of career and technical education in the school corporation. The committee, led by Director Doug Dillion, who by the way did a fantastic job leading the group, to look at the program using futuristic thinking. The committee developed a strategic plan for a five-year period to align students learning with post secondary institutions, career pathways, and industry opportunities.
Here at McLean High School, we have been very fortunate to receive new technology equipment that has allowed our students to take classes that we have not been able to offer in the past. These classes, called manufacturing processes, have allowed students to create projects that have been student driven. Our students have had to brainstorm, create designs on the computer, use the correct material to produce the design and set up the machine correctly to produce the anticipated project.
The students are very engaged with learning with these machines because it allows them to use their creativity and allows them to develop a skill that they can take with them when they graduate. Many times the teacher has to ask them to leave so that they don’t miss their next class; this is how involved students are when working on their projects.
In the Vigo County School Corp., it is obvious that Superintendent Tanoos wants to be sure students’ needs are being met one student at a time.

Busy season for music dept.
The Chauncey Rose Middle School music department has been in full swing this spring. The spring semester kicked off in January with band students attending the Indiana State School Music Association Solo and Ensemble contest at North High School. Several of the “Royal” musicians earned gold ratings for their outstanding performances.
February and March were extremely busy months as the choir prepared for the Indiana Music Educator’s Association Festival and the band prepared for the ISSMA Organizational contest. Both groups did a fantastic job and gained a lot from their experiences.
In addition to participating in the IMEA Festival, many members of the Chauncey Rose Choir produced their spring musical entitled “S’Cool”. Around 25 cast members and faculty members participated in the Musical making it a great success.
The final performance of the year will be split into two afternoons as all the Chauncey Rose bands and orchestras perform on May 20 and all the choirs perform on May 21 for the Chauncey Rose Spring Concert. All parents and community members are welcome to attend. Both concerts will begin at 2:30 p.m.
