RONN MOTT: Flight 370

Not too many days ago, I heard a reporter refer to Flight 370 as an accident. It wasn’t an accident … it was, most likely, murder. If this aircraft went down in the Indian Ocean, we will be extremely fortunate to find the remains of the plane and any of the people on it.

I can’t imagine this occurring because of anger, religion or just about anything else, but if this was a Muslim terrorist group, perhaps a home-made cell in Malaysia, they could have lived there for a long time, never be known, and never recognized as such. And, other than the volunteers who agreed to take this airplane down, the participants may have been the only ones who knew anything about it.

The Western world thinking of terrorism linked to the Muslim faith, always thinks of the desert countries of the Middle East. But there are very strong Muslims all over the world … Malaysia has a large Muslim population and so does Indonesia. I believe Indonesia claims to have more people of the Muslim faith than any other country in the world. A hidden cell of terrorists in either of these two countries would have been another needle in a haystack to find. Could this be the reason 239 people are dead?

Western China has a large Muslim population. They have been living there since the days of the Silk Road. There was trade going on in the days of Rome and it lasted until the 20th Century. These Muslim people are not appreciated by the ethnic Chinese and there have been many clashes between the ethnic Chinese and the people of the Muslim faith who have long roots in western China. It is possible this is a beginning to hurt China, but it is only a possibility. We do not know for sure. In today’s world, you have to think anything is possible.

Another possibility is this aircraft was trying to get to Pakistan or Afghanistan because the people who perpetuated the theft of the plane may have wanted to make contact with the extreme Muslim groups there.

If they wanted only to kill everyone and take the airplane into the ocean, why all of these electronic shenanigans and why the change of flight plans when there were many hundreds of miles of water beneath them?

I don’t know that we are anywhere near finding something about this Boeing 777, and I don’t know if it is even possible to find something like part of an airplane on the bottom of the Indian Ocean. There are mountain ranges, deep canyons and all under extremely rough water, especially in the winter time. (It’s getting to be winter “Down Under.”)

I’ve always griped about the way passengers are treated on American flights, but my longtime thought of, “The only way to fly is not to,” appears to be less strange today than the first time I uttered it on the radio.

Ronn Mott, a longtime radio personality in Terre Haute, writes commentaries for the Tribune-Star. His pieces are published online Tuesday and Thursday on, and in the print and online editions on Saturday.
