Rose-Hulman students, faculty to perform ‘Engineers in Concert’

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology students and faculty members will once again showcase their musical and dancing talents in the college’s annual “Engineers in Concert” performance on Friday in the Hatfield Hall Theater.

The free concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are not required and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

This concert allows Rose-Hulman students and faculty members to display their talents away from the classroom or laboratory, according to concert coordinator Bradley Burchett, associate professor of mechanical engineering. Performers were selected after campus auditions.

The diverse musical program will feature vocal, piano, dance and guitar soloists; vocal duos; a string quartet; a bluegrass group; and a violin and piano duo. The Rose-Hulman chorus and jazz ensemble will end the program.

Violinists Thomas Janssen and Sarah Kim will join Jeffrey Han on viola and cellist Ian Ludden in performing Antonio Dvorak’s String Quartet, Op. 96, No. 12 in F major, commonly known as the “American Quartet.”

Pianist Mike Yuan Xue will play Jarrod Radnich’s arrangement of selections from Hans Zimmer’s “Pirates of the Caribbean,” and violinist Homa Hariri will join pianist Sailesh Kadam in performing Jules Massenet’s “Meditation” (from “Thais”).

Gregory Komora will play his own guitar arrangements of “Dreamcatcher” and “Grave,” while Emily Morelli and Patricia Bacala will sing Sara Bareilles’ “Gravity.”

Wesley McCullough will perform with his sisters Kaitlyn, Ellissa and Clarissa in a vocal/dance piece choreographed by Wesley to Stephen Schwartz’s “All for the Best.” Giuliana Watson will also be featured, dancing to “Bring Me To Life,” a song by Amy Lee, Ben Moody and David Hodges.

The popular bluegrass favorite “Orange Blossom Special” (Ervin T. Rouse), “I Overlooked an Orchid” (Carl Smith) and “Crazy Arms” (Ralph Mooney) will be performed by guitarist/vocalist Zachary Ehlers, fiddler Homa Hariri, Hawaiian guitar player Rod Bradfield and bassist David Voltmer.

James Butler will showcase his vocal and piano skills in Jason Robert Brown’s “If I Didn’t Believe in You,” The father-and-son duo of James and William Mayhew will perform Mozart’s String Duo No. 1 in G major, K. 423.

The chorus, directed by Daniel Tryon, will sing Tom Johnson’s “Long Train Runnin’” and Maurice White’s “September,” while the jazz ensemble, directed by Norm Hanson, will perform Neil Hefti’s “The Kid from Redbank,” Roger Holmes’ arrangement of the Johnny Mercer classic “I Remember You,” and the Maynard Ferguson and Jimmy Giuffre favorite “Blue Birdland.”

Jason Scott Embry, executive director of development, will be the master of ceremonies for the concert. Randy Carle will be the production manager. He will be assisted by Brian Tovey and students Addie Hanchett, Nathan Montgomery and Kendal Rosenbaum.
