Small World Learning Center hopes to save Woods preschool

Sisters yet to consider options

WEST TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute preschool facility on Friday night has publicly announced its offer of a merger with The Woods Day Care/Pre-School.

Representatives of Small World Learning Center, a non-profit preschool located on Terre Haute’s east side, said the facility has reached out to The Woods Day Care/Pre-School and proposed a merger after this week’s announcement that the nationally accredited program at The Woods is scheduled to close on June 6, citing financial and enrollment concerns.

“When we heard about the possible closure of The Woods DC/PS program and how that would affect all of their families and past donors to their program, we felt like we had to try to help offer a solution to the problem,” Nic Tacker, administrator at Small World, said in a press release.

According to the release, the proposed merger would allow the staff to remain employed and the families to remain in a program with similar cost, pedagogy, among others considerations.

The Woods Day Care/Pre-School, sponsored by the Sisters of Providence, opened in 1987 with 19 children. It reached a peak of 92 children in 2008. Currently, enrollment is 77 children.

“They have contacted us,” said Sister Ann Casper, executive director of the Office of Congregational Advancement for the Sisters of Providence.

“We have not confirmed anything with them. We have chosen not to contact them at this point,” she said.

She also said they have not discussed it.

“It’s much too early to make this kind of decision,” she added.
