ISP arrest impaired semi driver in Putnam County

An Illinois semitrailer driver has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after registering more than three times the legal limit on a blood-alcohol test.

Jeffrey A. Cordle, 39, of Mapleton, Ill., was stopped Monday on Interstate 70 near the 33-mile marker in Putnam County after an Indiana State Police trooper saw what appeared to be erratic driving from an eastbound semi pulling a box trailer.

ISP Lt. Chris Wilson was working overtime in the construction zone near the 27-mile marker in eastern Clay County when he spotted the 2014 Freightliner at about 5 p.m. Monday. After stopping the vehicle, Wilson said he noted that the driver smelled strongly of alcohol and appeared intoxicated. The driver failed field sobriety tests and was taken to Putnam County Hospital where a blood test revealed a 0.29 percent blood-alcohol content.

Cordle was lodged in the Putnam County Jail on charges of driving while intoxicated, driving with a BAC of 0.15 percent or more and driving while intoxicated while endangering a person, all misdemeanors.

Cordle was driving an 80,000-pound commercial truck and trailer owned by Cox Transfer Inc. of Eureka, Ill.

The Indiana State Police at Putnamville encourage citizens to report suspected impaired or dangerous driving by calling 911.
