3 found dead after Indianapolis officer wounded

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Two women were found dead inside an Indianapolis home this morning after a gunman fired at a police officer outside the property, striking his protective vest, in the latest bout of violence that’s troubled the city in recent months, police said.

Other officers found the gunman dead following the shooting about 7:15 a.m. today, but it wasn’t immediately clear how the man was killed, police Lt. Christopher Bailey said.

Police Chief Rick Hite identified the wounded officer as Greg Milburn, a 10-year police force veteran. Bailey said he was taken to a hospital in good condition.

Officers were called to the neighborhood on the city’s east side following reports of a woman screaming. Bailey said the gunman came out from between two houses as Milburn approached, and the two exchanged gunfire.

Information was not immediately released on how the women died.

As neighbors and spectators milled around on the cracked sidewalks outside the yellow police tape barrier, the Rev. Frank Alexander led a circle of about 25 women and men in prayer. Hite joined in, holding hands with people beside him.

The deaths come as the city is on pace to have its deadliest year in at least eight years, with police reporting 60 homicides even before today’s confrontation.

Numerous squad cars filled the street near the house where today’s shooting happened in a neighborhood of one-story bungalows, where yards overgrown with bushes and weeds are mixed in with homes surrounded by carefully tended flower beds. Almost every house had an iron-grilled security door.

Hite said investigators were working to determine any relationships between the gunman and the women.

“This is otherwise a peaceful block by all assertions and we want to make sure that we understand exactly what’s happened,” Hite said.

Bailey said investigators didn’t believe anyone else was involved in the women’s deaths.
