---- — TAMPICO, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say a southern Indiana police officer is recovering after being shot in the shoulder, then returning fire and wounding the gunman.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department says Officer Rick Meyer has been released from an Indianapolis hospital after being treated for his wounds from the Thursday evening shooting.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Carothers says Meyer was attacked while responding to a suspicious persons report near the rural community of Tampico. Authorities say the officer was approaching one man when another man who was hiding under a bridge shot at him.

Carothers says Meyer was wounded in the shoulder above his protective vest and shot the gunman in the arm. The wounded man was taken to a hospital in custody, while the other was arrested on a Jennings County warrant.
