TERRE HAUTE — The name of a Terre Haute man who died after being burned near a backyard fire pit on Friday night has been released.

Francis E. Black, 62, died after being airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment. He suffered severe burns while at a home in the 1000 block of Barton Avenue.

Assistant Chief Shawn Keen of the Terre Haute Police Department told the Tribune-Star that a person at the scene reported that she and Black had been sitting in the back yard at a fire pit when she went into the home to answer the telephone. Another family member soon arrived and alerted the family to the tragic fire and received help putting it out and attending to the victim.

Keen said people at the scene reported that Black had been consuming alcohol, and people were gathering to celebrate his upcoming birthday.

Results of an autopsy conducted Monday have not been released by the Marion County Coroner’s Office, Keen said this morning while indicating that the investigation is ongoing.
