Mo-ped driver airlifted after accident

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital this morning following a collision at Lafayette Avenue and Seventh Street.

Assistant Chief Shawn Keen of the Terre Haute Police Department said the name of the victim is not being released pending notification of relatives.

The driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee told police that he was southbound on Lafayette making a left turn onto Seventh Street, and did not see any other people or vehicles at the time. However, the driver reported feeling like his vehicle had run over something, so he stopped and got out to check. He then found a person and a mo-ped in the road.

The mo-ped rider suffered a head injury as well as additional trauma, Keen said, and could not speak to police.

A relative of the mo-ped rider told police that the man usually leaves for work in the morning and goes north on Seventh Street, then turns onto Lafayette.

There were no eyewitnesses to the incident, Keen said. It was overcast and raining at the time of the accident.

Accident reconstructionists were called to the scene to assist in the investigation.

More information will be released by police as it becomes available, Keen said.
