Terre Haute man facing felony arson charges

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man faces a charge of class-B felony arson in connection with an August garage fire.

Allen Wade Orman, 28, appeared in Vigo Superior Court 3 on Tuesday, where he was also charged with being a habitual offender.

According to a probable cause affidavit, a witness reported seeing Orman and a woman walking a dog down an alley in the 900 block of East Margaret Avenue when the fire occurred. The witness said that Orman and the woman split up after the fire began, so he followed the woman, who went to a house where Orman also had gone. In a photo lineup, the witness identified Orman as the man who had been in the alley when the fire began, causing more than $5,000 damage to the building and its contents.

The habitual offender charge stems from prior unrelated felony convictions that Orman had in 2003 for theft and 2004 for burglary.

If convicted of both charges, Orman faces a sentencing range of 16 to 50 years in prison.

Judge David Bolk set a trial date for Aug. 19, with a pretrial conference on July 28.

Orman returns to court March 20 for a bond reduction hearing. He is currently being held in the Vigo County Jail on bond of $75,000 cash only.
