Coroner: Child death at Sullivan daycare resulted from smoke inhalation

SULLIVAN — A 1 1/2-year old girl died as the result of smoke inhalation in a fire this morning at Waterman’s Wonderland Daycare in Sullivan.

Jeff Griffith, Sullivan County coroner, has confirmed the cause of death following an autopsy that was performed today at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

The name of the child, whose body was found in a playpen, is not being released pending notification of family members.

Sullivan Fire Chief Rob Robertson earlier said that about a half-dozen children, ranging in age from 1 to 10 years old, were in the daycare under adult supervision at the time of the fire. The other children were not injured.

The daycare building, a structure Robertson described as a modular, is a separate building near the owner’s residence in the 500 block of East Silver Street in Sullivan.

Three fire stations were dispatched to the daycare at 5:38 a.m. The Sullivan Fire Department, Thunderbird Fire Protection District in Farmersburg and the Carlisle-Haddon Fire Department all responded to the fire.

The cause of the fire is not yet known; however, the State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating.
