Children’s Museum sets belated Ben Franklin birthday bash

TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Children’s Museum will host a belated birthday celebration for Benjamin Franklin from 1 to 3 p.m. Jan. 26. “Ben’s Birthday Bash,” free with museum admission, will include many activities and presentations, including a special appearance by Benjamin Franklin himself.

Franklin, born Jan. 17, 1706, became famous for being an inventor, scientist, economist, printer, philosopher and statesman. At his birthday bash, guests will learn about his numerous accomplishments, including being a founding father, his interest in music and meteorology, and his emphasis on being wise with money.

The celebration, co-sponsored by the Indiana State University Go Figure team, the ISU Center for Mathematics Education, and the new ISU Old National Bank Financial Health Program, will feature a number of hands-on activities for kids of all ages and a special appearance by Miss ISU.

Museum guests will learn about some of Ben Franklin’s lesser known accomplishments, including his musical abilities. Franklin played the viola and had several musical friends, including Mozart and Beethoven. Franklin also created an instrument and during the event, guests will learn about the instrument he created and make music themselves.

Not only will guests learn about the things Franklin did, they also will have the opportunity to work with him on a special math activity. And, since Franklin was wise with his money, and he is featured on the new $100-dollar bill, Miss ISU and the ISU Network Scholars will help guests learn about spending and saving money. To conclude the event, at 2:30 p.m., there will be drawing for one lucky guest to win a prize.

The Terre Haute Children’s Museum, at Eighth Street and Wabash Avenue, is a nonprofit institution dedicated to enriching children’s lives through the exploration of science and technology. Museum admission is free for members and children under 24 months. Regular admission is $7 for adults and children over 24 months.
