RONN MOTT: ‘Texans’ loss’

I’m not a coach, never played football, not even in high school, but I have broadcast hundreds of games and talked to that many coaches in interview situations, so I guess I’m not an expert but I’m fairly knowledgeable in the sport. This is a set-up for me to say, the Houston Texans made a big, big, blunder! Hang on, we’ll explain.

The Houston Texans drafted a defensive player from South Carolina. He is, according to the observers who are supposed to know, going to tear through offensive lines and tear down their running back and make mincemeat out of quarterbacks. It was said he may be the best football player in the Draft this year. All of these things are good things and good reasons to draft a strong, defensive player. But, let’s keep this in mind … the National Football League players play their game on the biggest entertainment stage in America. And, while a defensive player is a logical choice to be No. 1, in the Draft, I don’t think he’ll be selling many season tickets.

The Cleveland Browns, the day before the Draft, had sold only a whopping 40, that’s four zero, tickets. Johnny Manziel, Johnny Football, was chosen late in the first round. So, the fan base did not get to know who their favorite team chose until about midnight. Between midnight and 7 a.m., the Cleveland Browns sold 1,200 season tickets. The fans in Cleveland knew what the big-shot executives obviously did not know. And that was Johnny Manziel will not only win football games, he will put on one whale of a show.

All the teams that passed him by based their decisions on how tall he is, how much he weighs, how good his intentions will be, etc., etc. A true Texan would have known one of the most famous old sayings to come out of the Lone Star State, “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.”

Johnny Manziel has not only got the fight, he is spectacular. And the defending linemen, linebackers, and defensive backs are going to find that out very soon in the National Football League.

Jon Gruden is not only a good football coach, but a superb, on-camera personality, and very knowledgeable about what will and will not work in the NFL. I would certainly back Jon Gruden who has a good eye and a good understanding of what makes winning quarterbacks.

All of the guys who passed by Johnny Manziel in the Draft are going to end up eating crow. Why don’t we bring them to Terre Haute … even though it is May and the spring of the year, we still have plenty of crows to go around.

It’s really going to be fun watching Johnny Manziel in a Cleveland Browns’ uniform.
