All aboard for Train Day at Children’s Museum

TERRE HAUTE — Model trains will make a stop at the Terre Haute Children’s Museum as it transforms into a train station for Train Day. Explore the museum to see trains of all types and sizes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 19.

Each floor of the museum will feature a variety of model train setups, including operational layouts, dioramas and displays. Some of these setups feature astonishingly realistic landscapes, filled with details such as forests, hills, roadways, buildings and figures. Kids will be sure to enjoy watching the operational train layouts, which include powered trains that travel through the miniature landscapes.

Among the trains that will be at the museum are operational layouts from the 1930s to 1950s, an interactive operational Thomas the Tank Engine, and a colorful diorama of a circus train bringing aboard exotic circus animals. And there will be several more to see.

Additional activities include viewing railroad movies, and looking through historical photographs of the trains and railroads of Terre Haute. A kids’ activity area will also offer fun train-themed crafts, including coloring activities and making conductor hats.

Model train hobbyists and railroad organizations, including the Wabash Valley Railroaders Museum and the Linden Depot Museum, are scheduled to participate in the event.

Train Day activities are free with museum admission. Regular museum admission is $7 for adults and children over 24 months. Admission is free for museum members and children under 24 months.

The Terre Haute Children’s Museum is a nonprofit institution dedicated to enriching children’s lives through the exploration of science and technology.
