RONN MOTT: Presidential Ambush

No wild-west ambush, either real or fiction, has been as successful as the ambush on President Barack Obama. President Obama came into office knowing he was the president for all the people, North, East, South or West. His ideas were mounted to serve everybody. What a shock it must have been to him to find out the Republicans had no plans, no ideas, and no wishes to work with him or the other people across the political aisle, especially in the House of Representatives.

Mitch McConnell, Republican senator from Kentucky, held a meeting, in the basement of a restaurant, with political Republican big-wigs, especially those on the far right, and he would lay down the plan of attack. First, we talk about cooperating with members of the other party and the new president. But then, we will do nothing to agree with them on anything, anytime, anywhere. The idea is to make things as tough as possible on this new president who defeated the man they all knew was going to win (Mitt Romney), but did not. All that money, all of those primary debates, and all of those presidential-like proclamations were to no avail. Even without Sarah Palin to hang the loss on, Mitt Romney, somehow, some way, managed to lose. The right wing of the GOP has not forgiven Mr. Romney or the man who defeated him, Barack Obama.

If the GOP representatives in the House were paid by the hour of actual work, that is, proposing new legislation or changing things they did not like, they would not have earned a single dollar. The do-nothing Congress is as bad a House of Representatives as we have ever had to serve this country. Their job is to act on legislation, pay the bills, and to agree or disagree with the Executive Branch of government. This House of Representatives hasn’t done anything that would stand up as a Congress doing the work it is supposed to do.

To further add fuel to the fire, Speaker John Boehner is planning to sue the President for issuing executive orders, according to this Republican from Ohio, that are unconstitutional. As best we could gather, presidents have been doing this since the very first one, George Washington. Barack Obama has issued 180 executive orders since becoming president. George W. Bush issued 291, Ronald Reagan, 381, Richard Nixon, 346, and Dwight Eisenhower, 484. Another Republican, Theodore Roosevelt, issued 1,081. William Howard Taft issued 724. Other Democrats were busy as well. Woodrow Wilson issued 1,803, just slightly more than Calvin Coolidge at 1203. And not a one of these men, to my knowledge, was ever sued by the Speaker of the House, be he Democrat or Republican, or whatever Mr. Boehner truly is.

I think Barack Obama should be more like Harry Truman. In case you aren’t old enough to remember, or you haven’t heard it before, Mr. Truman was called, “Give ’em hell, Harry.” He was called that by the press of the day, newspapers, radio, and early television. For my money, Barack Obama has been too nice trying to get along with these idiots in the House.

Unfortunately, Harry Truman will not be making any more appearances at the White House. These right-wingers are trying to destroy not only this president but the structure our forefathers set up for us … legislative, executive, and a court system of this country. I’m going to say what I have said for a long time. But wait, a writer for a Toronto newspaper said it best and I repeat, “We never have to worry about the Tea Party in Canada. It won’t happen here because we are too nice and too smart.” Well said.
