RONN MOTT: Collett Park

Saturday at the Park, Collett Park, another beautiful wedding was held. They looked so nice in the warm weather with the Gazebo acting as church sanctuary, I would almost be tempted myself to do it again, and do it outdoors at the Park. No, no, no, not again, even as pretty as it is in the Park on a nice July Saturday.

I’m amazed about how nice people are who walk around the Park. Saturday evening my wife and I heard this crashing sound. Not knowing what it was, we rushed to the front porch to look out. What we saw was a huge part of a tree that had strategically fallen so it blocked the north bound lane of Seventh Street. The tree is directly across the street from our house. We ran out to see if we could move the limb to keep people from driving into it. Terre Haute drivers certainly don’t need an obstruction on a very busy street like Seventh and a good portion of a tree blocking the road. So, we tried to pull it up and it was too much for Mrs. Mott and me to do, so we picked up some of the small, broken limbs we could carry and threw them up into the green grass that separates the sidewalk from the street.

A male walker came by and I asked him to volunteer to give us an assist. He said we probably had too much tree there for three of us to handle and we agreed. The wife left the area to call the police and another fellow, Greg Gray, came trudging up the sidewalk. Greg is a lieutenant in the Guard Corps at Rockville State Prison. He told me he was walking again to eliminate some of the weight he had acquired over the winter. I also learned, like myself, he had served in the United States Air Force. With Greg’s help, the three of us (mostly the two of them) managed to pull this mess far enough along to get it out of the street. We picked up the smaller limbs and added them to the pile.

I didn’t clearly get the other man’s name, but like most of the people who walk around the Park, a friendly and affable person willing to help this more than small problem.

My wife didn’t report it to the police because as she dialed the number she checked on the situation and saw the limbs had been moved off the street and would not cause any traffic problems.

Mellow, our friendly, male, golden Tabby had to watch all of the proceedings from the front window and, when it was over, he decided to go out.

And so it goes … from a lovely wedding to a crashing part of a tree, and a nice night watching the goings-on, sometimes more than watching all the happenings at Collett Park.
