Storm blamed for death of ISU falcon chick, 1 missing

TERRE HAUTE — Western Indiana bird-watchers thrilled by only the second hatchings in a half-century of peregrine falcon chicks are mourning the death of at least one of the two new chicks.

Indiana State University officials found the chick dead Wednesday at the base of ISU’s vacant Statesman Towers, while the second chick was missing from a rooftop nesting box.

School biology professor Steven Lima blames the hatchling’s death on severe storms that swept through the area Tuesday night.

The month-old chicks were banded in late May by the state Department of Natural Resources.

Lima says the birds were western Indiana’s second falcon hatchings in at least 50 years, following three chicks hatched in 2010.

He says it’s “a simple fact of life” that relatively few peregrine falcon chicks make it to adulthood.
