Indy hospitals release patients from Memorial Day I-70 crash in Clay County

Two people are recovering following a Memorial Day crash on Interstate 70. The four-vehicle accident occurred Monday afternoon in the eastbound lanes of I-70 in Clay County, near the 21 mile marker.

Russell Graham, 53, of Orilla, Ontario, Canada, had been airlifted to Methodist Hospital for treatment; he has been released. Anthony Foy, 25, of Muncie, was airlifted to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital. Foy is expected to be released today, according to a hospital official.

Traffic on Monday had been slowed for lane restrictions in a construction zone when a 2009 Honda pickup pulling a box trailer, driven by 43-year-old John Fenton of Toronto, Canada, failed to slow or stop and struck the rear of two vehicles — a 2014 Jeep Cherokee driven by 57-year-old Richard Schultz of Alpina, Mich., and a 1996 Dodge pickup driven by 24-year-old Jason Griffis of Pendleton — according to an Indiana State Police news release. The Griffis vehicle then struck the rear of a 2001 Toyota SUV driven by 23-year-old Millard Curtis of O’Fallon, Ill.

The accident happened at 1:56 p.m. Monday. No citations were issued and eastbound I-70 was closed for nearly 1 1/2 hours for crash investigation and cleanup.

The crash was investigated by ISP Trooper Brandon Mullen. Assisting were ISP Sgt. Tom Hannon and Trooper Mike Wood, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, TransCare EMS, Owen County EMS, Posey Township Fire/Rescue, Lifeline Air Ambulance and AirEvac Air Ambulance.
