4 men killed in pair of Indianapolis shootings

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis’ homicide count is on pace to reach its highest level in nearly a decade with a shootout that killed three men and a fatal home invasion in different sections of the city.

Police spokesman Lt. Christopher Bailey said today that the overnight shootings brought the number of violent deaths in the city to 59 so far this year. That compares with 47 at this time last year, when the city had a total of 125 homicides, its highest count in seven years.

Officers responding to a report of gunfire in a working-class neighborhood on the city’s northwest side Monday night found two men dead just outside the front door of a house. Sgt. Kendale Adams said a wounded man found behind the home died after being taken to a hospital. A 10-year-old girl in a nearby home was hit by a stray bullet and hospitalized in stable condition, police said.

Nearby homes were pock-marked by bullets from what police described as a shootout. One man found nearby was being questioned, police said.

Except for the taped-off crime scene and a handful of police cars and vans, life in the subdivision with houses for sale and overgrown yards seemed to be carrying on as normal Tuesday morning, as neighbors stepped out to get their mail and a woman pushed a stroller as two young children tagged along.

Police said two Indianapolis men, Esker Dodson-Walker, 33, and Stranger Dunn, 34, were among those slain. A third victim was not identified because his family hadn’t been notified of his death.

Police said the other fatal shooting happened late Monday night when two men stormed into a house in a run-down neighborhood on the city’s near northside and killed 24-year-old Patrick Martin of Indianapolis in an apparent robbery attempt. Eight young children in the home weren’t hurt.

In an unrelated incident, Indianapolis police shot 27-year-old Raymond Mims when he fled on foot about 2 a.m. Tuesday after officers stopped a car following a robbery at a gas station on the city’s west side. The driver of the car was arrested.

Police said today that Mims was being treated at a hospital.
