Loan officer to be in court Monday

$63k in fraud, theft, police say

WEST TERRE HAUTE — A First Financial Bank loan officer was arrested early Saturday and charged with 11 felonies for allegedly stealing from and committing fraud against the financial institution — for amounts totaling $63,433.47, officials have confirmed with the Tribune-Star on Saturday.

Amy Schaffer, who worked at the West Terre Haute branch, was charged with five counts of fraud against a financial institution, one count of forgery and five counts of theft — all felonies — said Lt. Bill Bark, a detective with the West Terre Haute Police Department. Bark said Schaffer is scheduled to appear on 10 a.m. Monday at Vigo Superior Court, Division III.

According to police, Schaffer allegedly wrote cashier’s checks to herself, which were deposited into accounts owned by her and her husband. She is also alleged to have forged names on loan documents to get them approved.

First Financial Bank security officers first noticed what was happening and reported it to police, officials said. The investigation started in November 2013, Bark said.
